U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum announced on Apr. 2 a new strategic initiative aimed at improving resource management and the delivery of critical services across the country.

The effort is intended to optimize operations, streamline bureaucracy, and ensure economic benefits for taxpayers and communities. The Department said this modernization supports President Donald J. Trump's commitment to strengthening federal performance and delivering value for citizens.

According to Burgum, "Effective stewardship requires disciplined management of the resources entrusted to us." He said, "By modernizing our operations we’re strengthening our ability to carry out Interior’s mission and deliver world-class service for the American people."

Key elements of the initiative include shifting more National Park Service positions toward visitor-facing roles, enhancing support for tribal nations and tribal justice, modernizing permitting processes by removing redundant layers, focusing on water and power missions, accelerating scientific research delivery, and advancing responsible land and wildlife management nationwide. The Department also plans to reduce administrative burdens while improving internal operations so staff can provide faster service.

The Interior Department will offer another Deferred Resignation Program as well as an additional opportunity for Voluntary Early Retirement as part of this initiative.

Looking ahead, officials say they are committed to working with states, tribal nations, territories, local communities, partners, concessioners and industry in order to ensure responsive service and meaningful benefits for Americans.
