Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin visited Astoria, Oregon on April 10, where he participated in several events with the United States Coast Guard and local leadership. The visit included tours of Coast Guard training facilities and meetings with personnel.
The trip highlights the role of the Coast Guard in protecting maritime borders and recognizes their high retention rate among military branches. During his visit, Mullin said, "We toured the world class rescue facilities and met with the fearless men and women who protect our maritime borders. I found out the USCG has a 90% retention rate which is higher than any of our military branches. Thank you for your outstanding attitude and keeping our country safe."
Mullin was joined by Commandant of the Coast Guard Kevin Lunday, Congresswoman Marie Gluesenkamp-Perez, and other officials as they toured both the National Motor Lifeboat School and Air Station Astoria. The Secretary also met offsite with crew members connected to fallen Petty Officer 2nd Class Tyler Jaggers.
Jaggers died on March 5 after suffering critical injuries during a rescue operation offshore Oregon on February 27 while serving as an aviation survival technician at Air Station Astoria.
The Department released photos from Mullin’s visit that show him meeting with Coast Guard personnel, touring facilities, walking alongside staff members, and visiting training schools.
