Lexington man charged with illegal firearm possession after house fire investigation

A federal criminal complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court in Lexington on Apr. 13 charging Jonathan Huff, a 37-year-old Lexington resident, with illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The case is significant as it involves the intersection of public safety concerns and law enforcement response following an emergency incident. Authorities responded to a house fire on Orleans Circle in Fayette County, where Huff was identified as both the resident and someone involved in criminal activity.

Law enforcement officials obtained search warrants for Huff’s residence and vehicle during their preliminary investigation. Two firearms were found inside his vehicle, and Huff admitted to possessing them despite being legally prohibited due to previous felony convictions from Indiana.

The ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire includes participation from multiple agencies: the Lexington Police Department’s Hazardous Devices Unit, Lexington Fire Department Arson Investigators, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

“This case highlights how vital rapid intervention and coordination is when a threat to public safety emerges,” said Jason Parman, First Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky. “Thanks to the quick and coordinated efforts of our local and federal law enforcement partners, a dangerous situation was addressed, and a prohibited individual was taken into custody. Our Office will continue to act decisively to protect our communities.”

John Nokes, Special Agent in Charge at ATF Louisville Field Division said: “The defendant in this investigation is federally prohibited from possessing firearms due to prior criminal conduct. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) remain committed to prioritizing investigations that hold accountable individuals who pose a threat to public safety and the communities we serve. We are proud to partner with the Lexington Metro Police Department, Kentucky State Police, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in this investigation.”

Chief Lawrence Weathers of Lexington Police Department added: “It takes all of us to keep our communities safe. I want to thank all of our federal, state, and local partners who worked with the Lexington Police Department to investigate the Orlean Circle explosion. Our continued combined efforts help make a safer community for us all.”

Jason Parman announced that Assistant United States Attorney Cynthia Rieker is representing the United States in this case.

Officials remind that charges contained within complaints are accusations only; defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.
