The House Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg said on Apr. 15 that the Working Families Tax Cuts are delivering benefits for students, workers, and families by reducing costs, improving accountability, and expanding career opportunities.

The announcement comes as the committee reports that these tax cuts have saved taxpayers an estimated $284 billion while aiming to ensure federal education funds are used responsibly. The reforms target issues in higher education such as student debt and limited job prospects after graduation.

“The Working Families Tax Cuts represent one of the most significant higher education reforms in decades,” said Chairman Walberg. “On Tax Day, we’re highlighting how these policies not only provide relief for working families, but also fix a broken system that left too many students with debt and too few opportunities.”

Key provisions of the legislation include stopping federal loans from supporting degree programs that do not improve graduates’ earning potential compared to those without such credentials. It also removes loan eligibility for consistently underperforming programs and requires educational institutions to share responsibility for their students’ long-term success.

The law sets clear borrowing limits on graduate, professional, and Parent PLUS loans while allowing financial aid administrators more flexibility to limit borrowing based on individual circumstances. It streamlines repayment options into fixed or income-driven plans designed to better serve working borrowers by scaling payments according to income levels and providing pathways out of default.

Additionally, Pell Grant eligibility has been expanded under the reforms to cover high-quality short-term workforce programs. These changes require strong outcomes such as job placement rates and earnings while empowering states to align training with industries in demand.

The House Education and Workforce Committee manages federal programs related to education, labor, health, and workforce development according to its official website. The committee also influences policy on student loans and worker protections as reported by its official website and serves within the legislative sector overseeing education and labor matters according to its official website.
