A Shiprock man pleaded guilty on Apr. 16 to stabbing a woman in the parking lot of a local business, according to federal authorities.
The case involves an incident that took place on August 31, 2025, when Tony Tsosie, age 57 and an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, stabbed Jane Doe in the face and thigh with a sharp object outside Bashas’ Diné Market in Shiprock, New Mexico. The event followed a verbal altercation between Tsosie and the victim. A witness reported seeing Tsosie stab the woman multiple times.
After the assault, officers from the Navajo Police Department detained Tsosie. He denied involvement in the attack, provided law enforcement with a false identity, and claimed not to have a knife at the time of his arrest. Despite his denial, investigators confirmed his participation through witness statements.
The victim sustained serious bodily injury as a result of being stabbed. In court proceedings, Tsosie pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury and now faces a stipulated sentence of 24 months imprisonment at sentencing.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office announced these developments. The Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office led this investigation with support from both the Navajo Nation Police Department and Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico is prosecuting this case.
