Senator Lindsey Graham, Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, praised President Trump's proposed increase in national defense funding to $1.5 trillion during a hearing on April 17. The hearing focused on the President’s Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Proposal and featured testimony from White House Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought.
Graham said the increased defense budget is important due to growing threats from adversaries and rising Chinese aggression. He highlighted the need for substantial investments in shipbuilding to ensure that the U.S. Navy remains prepared to defend American interests.
During the session, Graham also addressed ongoing funding issues for the Department of Homeland Security. He said there has been a lapse in funding for more than two months because Democrats have not approved money for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
In response, Graham announced he would move forward with a plan to use budget reconciliation as a way to fund these agencies despite opposition from Democrats.
The proposals discussed at this hearing reflect ongoing debates over federal spending priorities, particularly regarding national security and border enforcement.
