Olin D. Grant, Jr., age 30 and from Marrero, was indicted on April 16 for being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to an announcement by U.S. Attorney David I. Courcelle. The indictment states that Grant was found with a Glock Model 19X pistol on January 14 in the Eastern District of Louisiana after having been previously convicted of crimes punishable by more than one year in prison.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, which aims to use Department of Justice resources against illegal immigration and violent crime. The operation brings together efforts from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhoods.
Grant could face up to fifteen years in prison, a fine up to $250,000, three years of supervised release, and a mandatory special assessment fee if convicted. Courcelle said that "the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt." The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms along with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office investigated this case; Assistant United States Attorney Brittany Reed is prosecuting it.
