Joseph E. diGenova was sworn in as Counselor to the Attorney General on Apr. 20, taking on a senior advisory role within the U.S. Department of Justice.
In this new position, diGenova will advise the Attorney General on legal, policy, and enforcement matters. His appointment is considered significant due to his long experience in federal prosecution and complex investigations.
“Joe diGenova brings a lifetime of experience, judgment, and proven leadership to this role,” said U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones for the Southern District of Florida. “He understands the mission of the Department of Justice and the responsibility we carry to enforce the law fairly, protect the American people, and uphold the Constitution. I am confident he will serve with distinction.”
DiGenova previously served as United States Attorney for the District of Columbia from 1983 to 1988 after being appointed by President Ronald Reagan. He supervised major public corruption, national security, and violent crime prosecutions during that time before moving into private practice where he represented clients in criminal and civil investigations.
The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida operates under the Department of Justice with branch offices in Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Fort Pierce and Key West according to its official website. The office has about 223 assistant attorneys along with special assistants and support staff serving more than seven million residents across approximately 15,197 square miles spanning nine counties according to its official website. It prosecutes federal crimes, manages civil cases for government agencies and collects certain federal debts according to its official website.
As Counselor to the Attorney General, diGenova is expected to support efforts that protect Americans while ensuring fair administration of justice.
