U.S. Attorney Moore Capito urges participation in DEA drug take back event April 25

United States Attorney Moore Capito is urging residents of West Virginia to participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, scheduled for Saturday, April 25. According to Capito on Apr. 22, more than three dozen collection sites across the Southern District of West Virginia will accept unused and expired prescription medications from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The initiative aims to reduce the risk of medication misuse and accidental poisoning by encouraging proper disposal of prescription drugs. Collection sites will accept tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of medication for free and anonymous drop-off. Liquids should remain sealed in their original containers with tightly closed caps, while syringes, sharps, and illicit drugs will not be accepted.

Capito said, “Unused prescription drugs don’t just sit in a cabinet — they become a gateway to abuse, addiction, and tragedy. Taking a few minutes to dispose of them properly is one of the simplest, most effective steps we can take to protect our families, safeguard our communities, and save lives.”

This year marks the 30th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day held by the DEA. Since its inception, more than 20.4 million pounds (10,200 tons) of medication have been removed from circulation through this program.
