Carlos Egberto Jimenez-Tun, a citizen of Guatemala, was sentenced on April 22 to six months in prison for illegally reentering the United States after being deported, according to an announcement by David X. Sullivan, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut.
The case highlights ongoing federal efforts to address unlawful immigration and related criminal activity. The sentencing is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at combating illegal immigration and transnational criminal organizations.
Court documents show that Jimenez-Tun was first encountered by U.S. Border Patrol in Texas during a criminal alien smuggling investigation in April 2019. He was deported to Guatemala that July but returned and was apprehended again in September 2019 before being deported once more in November. Authorities said he unlawfully reentered the country after these incidents.
Between November 2023 and October 2025, Jimenez-Tun faced multiple arrests and convictions in Connecticut Superior Court for offenses including larceny, failure to appear, interfering with arrest, resisting arrest, and violating probation. He was arrested again on January 16, 2026 by ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations following his release from state custody. On January 27, he pleaded guilty to unlawful reentry.
The case is being investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Enforcement and Removal Operations and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Neeraj N. Patel.
