Santos Eliodo Irias Lobo of El Salvador and Dariel Antonio Florentino Moncada of Honduras were indicted on April 23 for conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Eric Grant. The indictment follows an incident on April 11 in which law enforcement stopped the defendants while they were traveling through Fresno County on Interstate 5 toward Oakland.
Authorities said Lobo was driving the vehicle and presented registration documents along with an El Salvador identification card that listed another individual's name. After consenting to a search, officers found three packages containing one kilogram each of fentanyl powder intended for delivery in Oakland.
The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case, which is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Sanchez. If convicted, both men face a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years in prison and could receive up to life imprisonment as well as fines reaching $10 million. The court will determine any sentence after considering statutory factors and federal sentencing guidelines. Officials emphasized that "the charges are only allegations; the defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt." This case is part of Operation Take Back America.
