Boozman and USDA Secretary address fertilizer costs and supply concerns

Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Chairman John Boozman said on Apr. 28 that he joined U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and committee members to discuss the administration’s work to lower fertilizer costs and called for long-term solutions to improve access and affordability.

This topic is important as many farmers are experiencing increased challenges with both the cost and availability of fertilizer during planting season. These difficulties could affect agricultural production if not addressed.

“Farmers across Arkansas have told me that the cost and availability of fertilizer have always been a concern, but as they head in to planting season this year, it’s even more worrying,” Boozman said. “These challenges highlight the broader issue: the need for a reliable, affordable and domestically secure supply of fertilizer.”

Boozman also said that the committee will examine these issues further at a hearing in May where legislative options will be explored for improving long-term stability for producers. He stressed immediate support as well: “In the short term, we must advance farmer assistance to help address the immediate needs of producers as they navigate these pressures,” Boozman said.

The Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee was proposed by Pennsylvania Republican senator William Findlay to raise agriculture's status according to its official website. The committee operates as a standing body within the U.S. Senate according to its official website.

Currently consisting of 23 members—12 Republicans and 11 Democrats—the committee manages legislation related to agriculture, nutrition, forestry, food security, hunger, and rural issues both domestically and internationally according to its official website. It has compared agriculture alongside commerce and manufacturing as three key sectors requiring balanced government support according to its official website.

Historically, it has shaped policies such as price supports for farmers in the 1930s and addressed international trade matters affecting agriculture in later decades according to its official website.
