Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley announced on April 29 a bipartisan resolution with Senator Jeanne Shaheen recognizing National Fentanyl Awareness Day.
The resolution aims to draw attention to the dangers of fentanyl, which has caused tens of thousands of deaths each year. The initiative highlights ongoing legislative efforts and the continued need for public awareness about the impact of this drug.
In remarks delivered on the Senate floor, Grassley said, “The illegal drug fentanyl kills tens of thousands every year.” He thanked Shaheen for her collaboration and noted that hundreds of thousands have lost their lives to fentanyl. Grassley also discussed his work with Senator Cassidy on the "HALT Fentanyl Act," which was signed into law last year. “So now, fentanyl is permanently scheduled, and law enforcement has more tools to remove the dangerous drugs from America’s streets,” he said. He commended President Trump and the Department of Justice for using these tools, saying, “Under President Trump’s leadership, fentanyl seizures continue to reach record highs, and countless Americans are safer as a result.”
Grassley addressed new concerns over fentanyl being mixed with xylazine: “As the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, I’m committed to continuing to combat dangerous drugs mixed with fentanyl, again, xylazine as an example.” He added that under his leadership, an important bipartisan bill addressing this issue had been reported by committee.
