Senate HELP Committee to hold Louisiana hearings on health care affordability and mental health

The U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee announced on Apr. 30 that it will conduct two field hearings in Louisiana next week to address ways Congress can make health care more affordable and improve treatment for mental health and substance use disorders.

The hearings are set to gather input from patients, providers, employers, and local experts within the health care system. The focus is on understanding challenges faced by Americans in accessing affordable care as well as effective support for those dealing with mental illness or substance use issues.

This announcement follows recent legislative actions involving Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who serves as chairman of the committee. According to the official website, Cassidy led the introduction of the Money and Value for Patients (MVP) agenda aimed at reducing costs and empowering patient choice. President Trump recently signed into law two bills sponsored by Cassidy: the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Reauthorization Act—which enhances prevention, treatment, and recovery services—and the HALT Fentanyl Act that permanently classifies fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs under federal law.

The first hearing titled "Making Health Care Affordable Again Part 2: Perspectives from Employers, Patients, and Providers" will take place at LSU Foundation Building in Baton Rouge on May 5. The second hearing called "From Crisis to Care: Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment Across the Continuum of Care" is scheduled for May 6 at Jefferson Performing Arts Center in Metairie.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee works to legislate on public health matters while also overseeing education policy and workforce issues with a goal of protecting health standards nationwide according to its official website. In addition to legislating policy affecting these sectors—including oversight over agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH)—the committee provides key oversight for federal laws impacting labor rights according to its official website.

As reported by its official website, this committee continues to play a significant role in shaping federal regulations that affect millions across America.
