Jonathan Kennedy, a 45-year-old resident of St. Albans, was sentenced on April 30 to 15 years and eight months in prison followed by five years of supervised release for his role in a methamphetamine distribution conspiracy and for violating the terms of his supervised release.
The case is significant due to the large quantity of drugs involved and Kennedy's continued criminal activity while under supervision. The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia prosecutes federal crimes and handles civil cases on behalf of the United States with the goal of enhancing citizens' quality of life, according to the official website.
Court documents show that between May and August 2025, Kennedy participated in a scheme where methamphetamine was shipped from California to Kanawha County. He admitted arranging pickups, taking possession, and redistributing several pounds of methamphetamine. On two occasions in May and June 2025, he provided half-pound quantities to another individual for further distribution. In one instance on June 25, he distributed about 690 grams to a confidential informant.
Law enforcement intercepted a package containing roughly 38 pounds of methamphetamine en route to Dunbar on August 22, replacing most with non-narcotic substances before delivery. Kennedy arranged its pickup by an associate before being arrested after taking possession himself. At this time, he was already serving supervised release following an earlier conviction related to firearm possession during an incident at Jet Life Apparel in Charleston.
United States Attorney Moore Capito said: “This isn’t just a drug case — this is a three-decade campaign of destruction. Nearly 40 pounds of meth, shipped in from California, funneled straight into our community like poison through a pipeline.” Capito added: “Even prison didn’t stop him. Even supervision didn’t slow him... Today, that pipeline is shut down... And let this be understood — if you bring this kind of poison here, we will hunt you down and make sure you don’t get a second chance...”
