Heather Mack, an Illinois woman who allegedly murdered her mother in 2014, was arrested Nov. 3 at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice press release, "If convicted, she faces a maximum statutory penalty of life imprisonment for counts one and two, and 20 years’ imprisonment for count three as well as a fine up to $250,000."
The U.S. Department of Justice alleges Mack murdered her mother Aug. 2, 2014, while on vacationing in Bali.
Heather Mack and her boyfriend Tommy Schaefer allegedly conspired to kill her mother, Sheila Von Weise, according to a DOJ press release. Schaefer allegedly committed the murder and then placed the body of Von Weise on a taxi trunk. Both were indicted in the Northern District of Illinois with one count of conspiracy to kill in a foreign country, one count of conspiracy to commit foreign murder of a U.S. national, and one count of obstruction.
Schaefer allegedly received advice from his cousin Ryan Bibbs before the murder.
Mack was convicted in Indonesia and sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment but was released on good behavior after seven years and two months in prison. She then was deported to the U.S. while Schaefer still serves the remainder of his 18-year sentence in Indonesia. In 2015 while Mack was still under trial, she gave birth to their daughter Stella. Stella continued to live with her mother in prison until she was 2 years old, Business Insider reports. Stella was then placed under the custody of an Australian woman until her mother was released.
