Federal agents have charged a New Mexico man with being a part of a human smuggling ring after nabbing him with 67 people allegedly concealed in his truck.

U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HIS) special agents recently took 22-year-old Javier Duarte into custody in Brewster County, Texas. Court documents show Duarte was driving a box truck through the Highway 118 checkpoint when he was arrested.

“That unscrupulous smugglers put lives in danger to support their criminal activity is reprehensible,” said Taekuk Cho, acting special agent in charge for HSI El Paso Taekuk Cho said in a press release. “Homeland Security Investigations continues to collaborate with our law enforcement partners to prevent Transnational Criminal Organizations from putting greed and profit before human life as well as national security.”

Agents added four of Duarte’s passengers were minors between the ages 8 and 13 years old. Three of the adults were also found to have prior aggravated felonies that included rape, possession with intent to distribute drugs and crimes involving moral turpitude.

Duarte faces charges of transportation of noncitizens and aiding or assisting noncitizens to enter the United States who were previously convicted of an aggravated felony. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison on both counts.

With over 10,000 employees, HSI is a directorate of ICE and the principal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. HSI is responsible for investigating crime that exploits the global infrastructure of trade and finance.
