State Department veteran Harry R. Kamian has recently been selected to serve as the Bureau of Energy Resources (ENR) senior bureau official and principal deputy assistant secretary.
Kamian has previously served as Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Reykjavik, Iceland. He also served as deputy chief of mission and deputy permanent representative to the U.S. Mission to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) from August 2017 to August 2020. During the first two years, Harry served as chargé d’affaires and acting permanent representative, according to a State Department press release.
"He is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, rank of Minister Counselor,” state officials said in the press release. “Harry most recently served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary and Acting Assistant Secretary for ENR."
From 2015 to 2017, Kamian served as deputy executive secretary in the State Department’s Executive Secretariat, where he worked closely with the secretary’s staff, leadership and chiefs of missions, according to the release. His responsibilities included setting agendas for overseas visits by the secretary to further US policy points.
During his 29-year career, he has been assigned to posts in Vietnam, Chile, Turkey, Cuba, El Salvador, and domestic posts in Washington, DC. He was deputy director of the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review, held position in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, and was on the staff of the Secretary of State in the Operations Center, the release said.
Kamian earned a master’s of science and foreign service from Georgetown University and bachelor’s degrees in International Relations and Spanish Language from the University of California, Davis, the release said. He is the recipient of numerous Superior Honor and Meritorious Honor awards.
