Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve is pleased to announce the commemoration of the 207th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans, taking place on-site for the first time since 2020.Battle of New Orleans anniversary events at Chalmette Battlefield will be highlighted by a wreath laying ceremony, living history, and black powder demonstrations. The event recognizes not only those who fought on the battlefield, but also those who supported the troops. We also commemorate the land that the battle was fought on, its significance to Indigenous people before, and communities such as Fazendeville that thrived thereafter.
The following activities, free and open to the public, will take place at Chalmette Battlefield- 8606 W. Saint Bernard Highway; Chalmette, LA:
Saturday, January 8th
- Wreath Laying Ceremony 10:00 a.m. The annual wreath-laying ceremony at Chalmette Monument will feature speakers, as well as an artillery firing honoring those who fought at the Battle of New Orleans.
- Black Powder/Living History Demonstrations 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Living history volunteers and students from Chalmette High’s JROTC program Recognizing Our Roots dress as civilians and troops from 1815 while sharing their stories, firing cannons and muskets, constructing a historical camp to demonstrate cooking and crafts, and explaining the importance of the battle in American history.
- Black Powder/Living History Demonstrations 11:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Living history volunteers and students from Chalmette High’s JROTC program Recognizing Our Roots dress as civilians and troops from 1815 while sharing their stories, firing cannons and muskets, constructing a historical camp to demonstrate cooking and crafts, and explaining the importance of the battle in American history.
Parking: Limited accessible parking spaces are available at the battlefield; all other public parking will be located at Chalmette National Cemetery (follow the signs and directions from rangers and deputies on the road). Walk along Battlefield Loop Road to the battlefield side (reading exhibits along the way) or catch a ride on one of our golf cart shuttles to the activities at the battlefield.
