WASHINGTON, DC - The House Energy and Commerce Committee today announced its hearing and vote schedule for the week of June 17, 2013. Beginning on Tuesday, the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee will continue its investigation into the Biowatch program. Also on Tuesday, the Energy and Power Subcommittee will explore barriers to U.S. energy exports and the full committee will begin consideration of four bills that seek to improve environmental regulations and increasing state authority. Finally, on Thursday, the Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade Subcommittee and the Energy and Power Subcommittee will hold a joint hearing exploring how America’s energy boom is helping to revive manufacturing across the country.
On Tuesday, June 18, the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee will hold a hearing on “Continuing Concerns Over BioWatch and the Surveillance of Bioterrorism." Committee leaders last summer opened an investigation into BioWatch, a program aimed at detecting and providing warning about potential biological attacks, which has been plagued by false alarms and other failures. As part of its ongoing investigation, the subcommittee next week will hear from the Department of Homeland Security, which is charged with running BioWatch, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to discuss the program. Among other questions, the subcommittee will examine what issues need to be resolved before decisions about Generation 3 are made.as they are posted.
Also on Tuesday, June 18, the Subcommittee on Energy and Power will hold a hearing on “U.S. Energy Abundance: Regulatory, Market, and Legal Barriers to Export." This hearing will continue the subcommittee’s look at the potential for increased U.S. energy exports. Members will discuss barriers, including regulatory hurdles, to exporting American energy resources such as coal and natural gas. Finally, on Tuesday, June 18, the Energy and Commerce Committee will hold opening statements for a markup on four bills: H.R. 2218, the “Coal Residuals Reuse and Management Act of 2013"; H.R. 2279, the “Reducing Excessive Deadline Obligations Act of 2013"; H.R. 2318, the “Federal Facility Accountability Act of 2013"; and H.R. 2226, the “Federal and State Partnership for Environmental Protection Act of 2013." Finally, on Thursday, June 20, the Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade Subcommittee and the Energy and Power Subcommittee will hold a joint hearing on “A Competitive Edge for American Manufacturing: Abundant American Energy." The hearing will explore how new technologies and innovation are unlocking domestic energy resources and helping to revive American manufacturing and bring high-paying jobs back to America. It will feature testimony from executives representing a number of manufacturing sectors who are seeking to capitalize on America’s newfound abundance of affordable and reliable energy supplies.as they are posted.
