Washington, DC- Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and Rep. Henry A. Waxman, Ranking Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, sent letters to Thomas Donohue, President and Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and Gregg Steinhafel, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Retail Industry Leaders Association, to better understand efforts by Wal-Mart officials to weaken the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), the law which makes it illegal to bribe foreign government officials.
Recent news reports reveal that top Wal-Mart executives participated in aggressive lobbying campaigns to scale back the FCPA and have been vocal in their criticisms of the law, even as top company officials were aware that the company may have engaged in corporate conduct in violation of the FCPA.
