Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement in response to press reports that Trump Administration officials sought to enlist intelligence officials and lawmakers to counter stories about ties between members of President Trump’s team and Russia:

"Almost every day, there is a new and disturbing revelation. The President and his associates have denied their communications with Russian officials, covered up their relationships, and pressured intelligence and law enforcement officials to help frame the press. We must have a truly independent commission to investigate the actions of the President, his campaign, his associates, and Russian officials and agents. The American people will not stand for an investigation that is tainted, that inappropriately shares information with the President's team, or that serves as nothing more than the President's political mouthpiece."

Numerous press reports have cited Russian officials who admit that the Russian government was in touch with Trump representatives during the presidential election.
