Washington, D.C. -Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, and Rep. Jamie Raskin, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, released a staff memo with new documents obtained as part of the Committee’s investigation of voter suppression allegations in Georgia, Texas, and Kansas.
“Our investigation confirms that officials in multiple states took steps to suppress the vote," Maloney and Raskin said. “As the Senate blocks action on legislation to combat these abuses, Americans must be vigilant to protect our right to vote in the upcoming election. In the spirit of the late Chairman Elijah E. Cummings, who was a relentless advocate for protecting this right, the Committee will do everything in its power to ensure that all Americans can exercise their rights freely."
The Committee will hold a hearing today with civil rights activists to examine lessons from the civil rights movement on combating efforts to suppress the right to vote and how many of these lessons are particularly urgent in the face of voter suppression efforts today.
