Today, Education and Labor Committee Republican Leader Virginia Foxx (R-NC) gave the following statement after the Biden administration announced its decision to fix the so-called “family glitch” within the Affordable Care Act (ACA), a decision which would have major adverse consequences for employer-sponsored health insurance and for taxpayers, and which goes beyond the authority of the executive branch:
“The Biden administration is usurping the authority of Congress in its attempt to expand Obamacare subsidies. This supposed fix would weaken the firewall between the ACA and employer-sponsored insurance, placing more individuals on government-controlled health insurance. This expansion would also drastically increase the cost of Obamacare for taxpayers, exacerbating the economic hardships our country is already facing.
“The vast majority of the 5.1 million Americans who fall into the ‘family glitch’ are already insured, meaning this so-called fix will push millions off their employer-sponsored plans and onto taxpayer subsidized plans unnecessarily. The Biden administration is clearly doing everything in its power to chip away at employer health coverage, which has been the backbone of health insurance for decades. This is a massive mistake and will bring our country one step closer to a socialist health care system.”
