Chair DeFazio Statement on Supreme Court Move to Reinstate Trump-Era ‘Dirty Water Rule’

Chair of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Peter DeFazio (D-OR) released the following statement after a Trump-era environmental policy was restored by the Supreme Court. Under the policy, states and tribes are limited in preventing projects that are detrimental to the environment.

“In their zeal to protect polluters, the conservative majority on the Supreme Court has abused the so-called ‘shadow docket’ process previously reserved for true emergencies and embarked on a reckless display of judicial activism,” Chair DeFazio said. “In all my years in public service I have never once had a constituent tell me their water was too clean. The Clean Water Act is a resounding public policy success story and it is a sad day when unaccountable justices take away those important protections without so much as a written opinion justifying their harmful decision. I will work with my colleagues and the Biden administration to mitigate the damage from this conservative attack and protect the American tradition of clean air and clean water.”
