Michelle Bachelet, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), has been given a letter penned by 60 human rights organizations urging her to "uphold principled and coherent response to China’s human rights crisis" by setting demands for her upcoming visit to China.
China has toned down Bachelet's impending visit, which are usually contingent on extreme Chinese government bias and inability to engage with organizations who are not overseen by the government. According to the letter,
In 2021, "Secretary Blinken affirmed in January that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is committing genocide and crimes against humanity against Uyghurs, who are predominantly Muslim, and members of other ethnic and religious minority groups in Xinjiang,” according to a government report.
“The crimes against humanity include imprisonment, torture, enforced sterilization, and persecution,” the report stated.
The letter states roughly 200 human rights organizations had already penned a letter to Bachelet asking her to report on the ongoing human rights concerns in the country, however a report has yet to be released despite her scheduled visit.
“We regret the perceived lack of coherence in the High Commissioner’s approach to addressing the human rights crisis in China, which poses a risk to the credibility of the OHCHR, and its perceived ability to tackle serious allegations against a major power,” the letter states.
