Murray Statement on Trump’s Appointment of Anti-Abortion Activist to Help Lead HHS

The following press release was published by the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on April 28, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

(Washington, D.C.) - Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, today issued the following statement on the Trump Administration’s reported decision to appoint Charmaine Yoest to be Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

“This troubling appointment puts an anti-abortion activist known for spreading misinformation in charge of communicating to women and men nationwide about their health and wellbeing," said Senator Murray. “Ms. Yoest has a long record of seeking to undermine women’s access to health care and safe, legal abortion by distorting the facts, and her selection shows yet again that this Administration is pandering to extreme conservatives and ignoring the millions of men and women nationwide who support women’s constitutionally protected health care rights and don’t want to go backward."
