'The Ukrainian people continue to suffer': Biden and Homeland Security make plans for more Ukrainian refugees

Pres. Joe Biden is set to confirm Uniting for Ukraine, a new streamlined process to welcome Ukrainians escaping from Russia's invasion of the nation.

The United States government is making an effort to process refugee applications more rapidly as part of the program. Applicants need a sponsor in the U.S. and must have been living in Ukraine as of February 11.

"The Ukrainian people continue to suffer immense tragedy and loss as a result of Putin’s unprovoked and unjustified attack on their country," Alejandro Mayorkas, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said, according to a press release from the agency.

Mayorkas continued to affirm his support for the plight of Ukraine and expressed a desire for further collaboration with U.S. allies in the region.

"DHS will continue to provide relief to the Ukrainian people while supporting our European allies, who have shouldered so much as the result of Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine," he said.

Other officials agreed with Mayorkas and expressed a desire for the United States to be a haven for Ukrainian refugees.

"We will help deliver on the president’s commitment to welcome 100,000 Ukrainian citizens and others forced to flee their homes in Ukraine, and our partnership with the Department of Homeland Security will help us fulfill that commitment," Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, according to the press release.
