Granholm: DOE to release oil barrels, seeks to make country 'energy independent'

Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm announced the Department of Energy would release 1 million barrels of oil per day for six months from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, per President Joe Biden's authorization.

The decision is the latest action by the Biden-Harris administration to lower energy costs for working Americans and follows a March 30 announcement of $3.2 billion in funding for home weatherization, according to a March 31 statement on the DOE website.

"Putin’s actions in Ukraine and the resulting disruptions to global energy markets have demonstrated the urgent need to accelerate our clean energy transition, which will make our country more energy independent and much less vulnerable to the whims of dictators," Granholm said in the release. "The Department of Energy and this administration are aggressively investing in a wide range of clean energy technologies, which will grow our economy, create good-paying jobs, lower costs for American families and combat the climate crisis."

Granholm also said the DOE will coordinate with international allies to release oil from other countries' strategic reserves to further alleviate gas prices, according to the statement. She noted the DOE supports Biden's decision to use the Defense Production Act to boost the "production of critical minerals that are key to building up our clean energy supply chains."
