Roth Statement on Webster Report

The following press release was published by the United States Committee on Finance Ranking Member’s News on April 13, 1999. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON -- Senate Finance Committee Chairman William V. Roth, Jr. (R-DE), whose IRS oversight hearings brought to light problems within the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Internal Revenue Service, today said that a review of CID released by Judge William Webster confirms that there are serious problems in the CID. IRS Commissioner Charles Rossotti appointed Webster to undertake the review last spring, following the Finance Committee's oversight hearings.

Roth released the following statement in reaction to the report:

"The report released today by Judge Webster confirms that there are serious problems in the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS. The report found that CID has strayed from its primary mission of tax law enforcement and raises the question of whether the whole division should be restructured to refocus on its mission, and ensure that this mission is carried out in the proper manner."
