Wyden Statement on This Week’s Trump Administration Rollbacks at HHS

The following press release was published by the United States Senate Committee on Finance Chairman's News on Jan. 19, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today released the following statement after the Trump administration this week announced it will encourage health care workers to deny services to women and LGBTQ individuals and overturn guidance on longstanding protections under Medicaid’s family planning freedom of choice provision that ensures states cannot arbitrarily defund essential family planning providers like Planned Parenthood:

“Just one day ahead of the historic Women's March and the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Trump administration is again working to yank our country backward when it comes to women's rights as well the rights of LGBTQ Americans," Wyden said. “Allowing states to defund Planned Parenthood is a cruel scheme that would particularly affect women who are struggling to make ends meet and unravel longstanding protections within Medicaid that safeguard every person’s right to get the health care they need and see the family planning provider of their choice. The administration is also encouraging health providers to use a license to discriminate, which will make it harder for women and LGBTQ Americans to access critical health services."
