Wyden Statement on GAO Study on Lost Tobacco Tax Revenue

The following press release was published by the United States Senate Committee on Finance Chairman's News on June 13, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today released the following statement on a GAO study on lost tobacco tax revenue:

“Tobacco tax loopholes continue to cost the government billions-$1.3 billion over just four years. This is an easy fix. Pipe tobacco should be taxed at the same rates as roll-your-own tobacco. Tobacco taxes fund critical priorities like cancer research and children’s health care, so there’s no reason this shouldn’t get done."
