Rangel and Levin Respond to Commerce Subsidy Investigation

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on March 30, 2007. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles B. Rangel (D-NY), and Trade Subcommittee Chairman Sander Levin (D-MI), issued the following joint statement today in response to the U.S. Department of Commerce decision to continue its investigation into the subsidization of Chinese paper products:

“We welcome the Administration’s decision to continue its subsidy investigation on paper imports from China.

“This decision represents a long overdue change in policy to impose countervailing duties on subsidized and injurious imports from non-market economy countries.

“We plan to move forward with bipartisan legislation introduced by Representatives Davis and English to ensure we are combating all unfair trade - whether it is dumping or subsidies - that puts American workers, farmers and businesses at a disadvantage.

“Changing the law will remove any doubt or court challenge to make certain that every industry can file a case if they have been harmed."
