WASHINGTON, D.C. - Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman John Tanner (D-TN) and Ranking Member Sam Johnson (R-TX) issued the following joint statement in response to the 2009 report of the Board of Trustees of the Social Security Trust Funds, released today:
“Today’s report shows that the recession is affecting Social Security just as it is affecting so many other parts of our economy. However, nothing in today’s report should give seniors a reason to be concerned that their benefits will not be paid in full. Congress is committed to ensuring that Social Security will remain a reliable source of economic security to retirees, those with disabilities, and survivors, for generations to come.
“The impact of the economy on pensions, savings and Social Security underscores the need for Congress and the Administration to work together to strengthen Social Security. There is no way to do this without bipartisan trust and cooperation. We are committed to laying the groundwork and moving forward to get the job done."
