CDC Report: 2.5 Million Young Adults Gain Coverage Thanks to Health Reform?

WASHINGTON - Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) and Health Subcommittee Ranking Member Pete Stark (D-CA) today highlighted a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showing that 2.5 million young adults have gained health insurance coverage thanks to health reform. A provision in the new law allows young adults to obtain coverage on their parent's health insurance plan until their 26th birthday. The report shows that the number of additional insured 19-25 year olds as a result of the new law is significantly larger than the 900,000 figure estimated in September. The policy went into effect in September 2010.

LEVIN: “This is further proof that the new health law is benefiting American families, ensuring that millions of young adults aren’t without critical health coverage. Many of the 2.5 million young adults who have gained coverage under the new law would be uninsured if Republican repeal attempts hadn’t failed. I will continue to fight those repeal attempts at every turn so that Americans have access to affordable and quality health care, now and in the future."

STARK: "In just over a year, 2.5 million young adults are taking advantage of the opportunity to get health coverage on a parent's plan. If that's not a reflection of health reform meeting an urgent need I don't know what is. This is only one example of the many consumer benefits that will continue to be rolled out as the law is implemented. That is why I'll continue to fight the out-of-touch Republican call for repeal."
