Levin on C-SPAN: House GOP Must Show Some Common Sense on Debt Ceiling

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on Jan. 16, 2013. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON - Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) appeared on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal this morning:

Rep. Levin: “The debt ceiling is not a weapon against the President. It is really a weapon against the people of this country, because the consequences of a default would ripple throughout the economy of this country. … [Republicans] now want to have a debt ceiling threat that would cause further erosion in the stock market. That would essentially have things begin to go haywire. I guess Republicans are going to be thinking this weekend about how they proceed. I think they need to proceed with sensibility and common sense instead of an effort to be so extreme that you threaten the economy of this country."
