FLASHBACK: Job Growth Stalled During 2011 GOP Debt Ceiling Brinksmanship

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on Oct. 9, 2013. It is reproduced in full below.

The last time congressional Republicans threatened to default on our nation’s debt obligations - in July 2011 - monthly job growth slowed dramatically, with fewer jobs created that month - 78,000 - than at any time in the last 31 months, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It’s no wonder, given that House Republicans at the time made clear they were planning for default, creating enormous uncertainty for businesses.
