WASHINGTON, DC - Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard Neal (D-MA), Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), and Education and the Workforce Committee Ranking Member Bobby Scott (VA-03) released the following joint statement today in response to the Trump Administration’s release of a proposed rule that would allow health insurance companies to offer short-term plans that do not comply with Affordable Care Act (ACA) consumer protection standards:
“The Trump Administration’s proposal to allow short-term health insurance plans that do not comply with the Affordable Care Act’s consumer protections is the latest step in their ongoing effort to sabotage our nation’s healthcare system. Today’s action will leave families on the hook for thousands of dollars in uncovered healthcare costs and allow insurers to once again discriminate against individuals with pre-existing conditions. Widespread marketing of these bare bones, junk plans will further destabilize health insurance markets, and will lead to higher premiums for everyone.
“The American people want access to high quality, affordable health insurance, and it is time for the Trump Administration to stop its relentless and destructive campaign to sabotage the Affordable Care Act."
Today’s announcement is the latest in an ongoing effort by the Trump Administration to unwind the ACA’s consumer protections.
