Brady Responds To Dems’ ‘Weaponizing Our Nation’s Tax Code’ Following Neal’s Request for POTUS’ Tax Returns

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on April 10, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The top Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee Kevin Brady (R-TX) sent the following letter to Treasury Security Steven Mnuchin after House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-MA) requested six years of the President’s tax returns.

Rep. Brady wrote to Secretary Mnuchin:

“Weaponizing our nation’s tax code by targeting political foes sets a dangerous precedent and weakens Americans’ privacy rights. As you know, by law all Americans have a fundamental right to the privacy of the personal information found in their tax returns."

“This particular request is an abuse of the tax-writing committees’ statutory authority, and violates the intent and safeguards of Section 6103 of the Internal Revenue Code as Congress intended."
