U.S. Rep. Howard Berman Expresses Deep Disappointment following Russian, Chinese Veto at the U.N. on Syria

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on July 19, 2012. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, DC - Congressman Howard L. Berman, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, expressed deep disappointment following the Chinese and Russian veto at the United Nations that sought to impose sanctions on the Syrian government. The statement follows.

"By vetoing sanctions on the barbaric Syrian regime, Russia and China have firmly attached themselves to a sinking ship. Assad's grip on power is disintegrating. Moscow and Beijing are doing the Syrian people and Syria’s neighbors - and, ultimately, their own global stature - great harm by giving Assad further diplomatic cover."
