Chairman Salmon on the hearing: “Last week when Secretary Kerry came before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I challenged him on the lack of a clear and cohesive U.S. strategy for the Western Hemisphere. From the emergence of the anti-American Venezuela-led ALBA bloc, to the increased presence of our strategic adversaries, Russia, Iran and China, the U.S. has suffered a decline in influence throughout much of Latin America. This decline affects the U.S.’ ability to advocate on behalf of our substantial commercial interests, and could present a threat to our national security. While the world is occupied with Russian aggression in the Ukraine, we must not ignore their activities in the Western Hemisphere, which includes docking a war ship in Havana harbor. Our hearing will examine where American influence is slipping in the region and steps we can take to re-engage our neighbors in Latin America with policies that protect and promote our commercial and national security interests."

As provocations continue, growing dangers stemming from its ongoing proliferation of nuclear weapons and missiles perpetually threaten to destabilize the entire region. And now the U.N.’s report of the Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in North Korea for the first time comprehensively details the systematic, widespread and gross crimes against humanity being perpetrated by the tyrannical North Korean regime. While this horrific record has been known for many years, the time for willful blindness, for looking the other way needs to end. We need to move beyond reluctance because it’s evident the Administration’s strategy of implementing only minimalist measures is not working. This hearing will discuss the impact of the U.N.’s report and examine steps the U.S. and international community need to take to once and for all cut off the Kim regime."
