Royce Delegation to Africa Returns to U.S. After Visit to Sierra Leone

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on June 2, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. - House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce’s (R-CA) bipartisan delegation today concluded its four-country trip to Africa after a visit to Sierra Leone.

In Freetown, the delegation met with President Julius Maada Bio, who was sworn in on April 4 following peaceful elections, U.S. Ambassador Maria Brewer and U.S. embassy staff.

“The U.S.-Sierra Leone relationship has long been rooted in shared values and heritage," Chairman Royce said upon return to the states. “In recent years, the U.S. has stood side-by-side with Sierra Leone to help bring war criminal Charles Taylor to justice and stop the deadly spread of Ebola. Now we join Sierra Leoneans in looking toward a brighter tomorrow. I want to thank President Bio for welcoming us late on a Friday, and am encouraged by his reform agenda that starts with improving education.".
