Engel Statement on World Tuberculosis Day

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on March 26, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington-Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, made the following statement on World TB day.

“Though curable, tuberculosis is one of the world’s deadliest diseases, often killing more than a million people every year. There’s been significant progress in addressing this global health threat, but we have a long way to go and the United States has an important role to play in these efforts. On this World Tuberculosis Day, we recommit to meeting the challenge head on. The United States must lead in coordinating global endeavors-in government and the private sector-to improve diagnosis and treatment, and work toward a future free of tuberculosis throughout the world."

Background.

As co-chair of the Tuberculosis Elimination Caucus in Congress, Chairman Engel has been a long-time advocate for TB control efforts in Congress. This month, Chairman Engel wrote to the Appropriations Committee requesting robust global tuberculosis funding for USAID.
