Meeks Statement on Nord Stream 2

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on May 21, 2021. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C.-Today, Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement.

“I continue to oppose the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, which is clearly a means for Russia to engage in malign influence activities and efforts to undermine European energy security. Its completion will be a long-term problem for Europe and our close partner and friend Ukraine.

“After the previous Administration failed to stop this fossil fuel project as 95% of it was being built, we are left with fewer options to find a real solution. I will be watching closely the discussions with Germany, and intend to actively engage with the Administration to better understand the nature and impact of the decision to grant a waiver.

“Ultimately, the Administration needs to prioritize getting us to the right place in protecting Ukraine's energy security and economic interests and be prepared for every contingency. Waivers can always be revoked.".
