McCaul Once Again Calls for Release of Trevor Reed, Paul Whelan

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on June 14, 2021. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, DC - In response to comments made by Vladimir Putin this morning on NBC’s “Today Show" about Trevor Reed, a Texan and former U.S. Marine currently being held as a political pawn in Russia, House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul has released the following statement.

“Trevor Reed is a former Eagle Scout and U.S. Marine who is being held as a political pawn by the corrupt Putin regime - not a ‘troublemaker.’ Putin’s glib and dismissive lies about Trevor only further demonstrate the crimes he’s been charged with are absolutely ridiculous and politically motivated. I once again call on President Biden to insist on the release of both Trevor Reed and Paul Whelan as a pre-condition of his meeting this week with Putin. These two Americans deserve to come home to their families.".
