Chairman Johnson Applauds Capture of “El Chapo”

The following press release was published by the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs on Jan. 8, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

OSHKOSH - Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said this after Mexican authorities captured Joaquin “El Chapo" Guzman, head of the Sinaloa Cartel:

“The capture of Guzman is an important step in the fight to secure our border. As detailed in the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee’s report, "The State of America’s Border Security, " America’s insatiable demand for drugs, coupled with smugglers’ insatiable demand for profit, prevents the achievement of a secure border.

“Guzman's Sinaloa Cartel stands at the center of drug smuggling into the United States. This criminal organization is considered the most influential, adaptable and powerful cartel in Mexico. It is responsible for the growth of tunneling at our southwest border and is the primary distributor of heroin that is wreaking havoc on communities across our country. I urge the attorney general to do everything in her power to secure his extradition."
