The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently revealed its annual list of top cities with the most commercial and multifamily buildings receiving the Energy Star certification, and Los Angles topped the list with 650 certified buildings.

According to the EPA news release, Energy Star buildings typically use 35% less energy on average and have 35% less carbon dioxide emissions than general structures.

“The city of LA is leading the way by proving that cutting energy costs, increasing efficiency, and reducing emissions, can also save money for municipalities and their constituents,” Martha Guzman, the EPA’s Pacific Southwest Regional administrator, said in the agency's news release. “Congratulations Los Angeles for its No. 1 Energy Star recognition in reducing carbon pollution and fighting the effects of climate change.”

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti noted in the EPA news release that the city paces the nation in clean buildings each year because of the emphasis it places on helping building owners reduce their carbon footprint, adding that

Garcetti also noted in the news release that buildings provide the city with an opportunity to show the world how climate action and economic opportunity can co-exist.

The city won’t rest on its laurels and Garcetti noted in the EPA release that more needs to be done and the city will continue to serve as an example as it makes good on its promise to cut emissions for healthier communities and stronger economies.
