Chairman Lynch to Hold Hearing with Chef José Andrés, International Aid Organizations on Humanitarian Situation in Ukraine

On Friday, June 10, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. ET, Rep. Stephen F. Lynch, Chairman of the Subcommittee on National Security, will hold a virtual hearing to examine the humanitarian crisis resulting from Russia’s unprovoked war against Ukraine and the efforts of international aid organizations to deliver urgently needed assistance to support civilians affected by the conflict.

Since Vladimir Putin launched his unjustified and unlawful invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Russian forces have unleashed indiscriminate violence against innocent civilians and forced millions of Ukrainians to flee their homes.  As of May 29, 2022, more than 6.5 million refugees have fled Ukraine and another 8 million are estimated to have been internally displaced within Ukraine, including approximately 2.8 million children.

The Biden-Harris Administration and Congress have provided millions of dollars in aid to support humanitarian response efforts in Ukraine.  International humanitarian and non-governmental organizations are also working to help vulnerable populations by providing meals, emergency health care, and family reunification and counseling services.

The hearing will provide an opportunity for Subcommittee Members to receive testimony from several such organizations about how the U.S. can continue to support the Ukrainian people.  It will also examine how the Biden-Harris Administration, in coordination with the international community, can prepare to respond to the ripple effects that the war in Ukraine is likely to have on vulnerable populations throughout the world.
