The U.S. Department of Transportation is awarding $518 million to improve safety and accessibility at airports across the nation.
According to a June 7 Federal Aviation Administration news release, a second round of Airport Improvement Program awards for 2022 will include 416 grants to facilities nationwide for an array of projects to improve facilities, repair runways and taxiways as well as upgrade lighting and signs. The release also noted equipment for maintenance and operation also can be purchased.
“We’re investing $518 million in airports across America so communities big and small can continue to safely and efficiently connect with the rest of the world." Shannetta Griffin, FAA associate administrator for airports, said in the release.
According to the FAA website, the AIP finds the projects in an effort to enhance the country’s aviation infrastructure.
The funding was made available via competitive grants, according to the news release. The FAA has awarded $1.1 billion of the $3.2 billion that was available during fiscal year 2022, according to the release.
In the release, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg noted the funding will “help improve airports around the country and better serve all Americans.”
