McCaul Statement on 25th Anniversary of Hong Kong Handover to the CCP

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on June 30. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, DC - House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul issued the following statement marking the 25th anniversary of the United Kingdom’s handover of Hong Kong to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

“When the United Kingdom gave Hong Kong’s sovereignty to the People’s Republic of China 25 years ago, the CCP signed an international treaty that bound them to respect Hong Kongers’ free and democratic way of life. The CCP trampled on that promise, destroying the freedom and autonomy that made Hong Kong unique, and extending their tyranny over Hong Kongers’ daily lives. On this anniversary, I remember the inspiring bravery of the people of Hong Kong, and strongly urge the CCP to respect Hong Kongers’ universal freedoms, end sham prosecutions under its dystopian national security law, release political prisoners, and return to its obligations under the Sino-British Joint Declaration."
